These are a few of my favorite things... (about yoga)

I was thinking a yesterday about all the reasons I tell people they should practice yoga.  After sounding repetitive and boring myself, I decided to make a list of all the benefits I've experienced through my yoga practice. Below are a few of the benefits yoga has brought into my life (in no particular order):
-    Physical fitness;
-    Flexibility;
-    Strength;
-    Awareness of my body;
-    Awareness of my breath;
-    Awareness of personal energy;
-    Joy of discovery;
-    Letting go of STRUGGLE;
-    Allowing touch and acknowledging my need for it;
-    Reading the body language of others;
-    Working through difficult emotions;
-    Taking responsibility for personal anger, fear and other destructive emotions;
-    Actively working to encourage healthy emotions like joy, happiness, and wonder;
-    Respecting self;
-    Trusting in the Universe;
-    Trusting in myself;
-    Loving myself;
-    Savoring each breath;
-    HANDSTANDS :)

Do you practice yoga?  What are a few of your favorite benefits?  If you've never tried yoga, I encourage you to give it a chance!  It has the potential to change your world :)

Focus, Intention and living from your Heart.

My yoga practice today brought me back to my roots and reminded me of why I practice Forrest Yoga. So much change is possible in the body, mind and spirit when you take time to breathe with focus and intention. Focus and Intention are the seeds for growth to become the person you are meant to be.

I experienced a shift in myself this morning. We worked backbends and heart openers. I discovered my own blocked heart energy resembled dirt: it was brown and dry and crumbly. It was old and mostly healed, like a giant scab that hasn’t quite fallen off yet. I mentally turned to the polar opposite of Earth and focused my breathing instead on bringing in the energy of Water to flush away the dirt and flood my heart with cool hydration.

About half way through class, I felt this technique begin to work it’s magic. I felt my ribs start to open and my diaphragm move with a greater range of motion. Heat built around my solar plexus and I felt light hearted. Which is not to say the class was physically easy, quite the opposite; it was a vigorous Forrest class. But the intensity of the class helped quiet my mind and focus instead on breathing new life into my heart.

I challenge you, my reader, to look into your own heart. Then make time today to do ONE thing to make your heart happy. It can be something as simple as taking a walk to enjoy the fall colors, doing something selfless for another, or playing fetch with your dog. What ever you decide to do: find joy in your activity and pass it on.

New Endevors

I moved to the Seattle area two months ago, a yoga teacher looking to teach.  I had just spent the last 6 months bouncing between Santa Monica and Gualala, California, learning Shiatsu massage and helping out family, when a good friend in Seattle offered me a rent free couch while I establish myself.  It was an offer I could not pass up and so I moved! Now I'm working for Experience Momentum and myself teaching studio and private yoga lessons.

I discovered Forrest Yoga when working in remote Alaska in 2005 and it was love at first asana. I practiced on my own and took various yoga classes for five years before I certified in Forrest Yoga last year.  I teach yoga in such a way that I remind others about our interconnectedness with each other and the world around us and I have a blast doing it!

Welcome to my blog: Adventures in yoga await us!
